The Art of Stillness

Nature has always been my mentor and life`s Guru, she taught me that everything is interconnected, down to the smallest pebble in the stream. The wind lightens my spirit as it rushes through my long hair. The birds chirping in a choir on top of the trees resonates within me, vibrates at a frequency that makes me smile. I gain immediate happiness and balance of mind. The songs of nature channels words I’m not able to express. My spirit finds personal growth when my body rests on the lush green grass. I become more attuned and attentive to the present moment that is enveloping within me as without. I experience love by nature, full of acceptance, free from the judgemental world we live in. I take my breaths and just sit and listen. My thoughts tell me that “I am enough within my own existence of being”.

I’m enough within my own existence of being.

I’ve started awakening to the flower of self. I was listening to Pico Iyer the other day on TedTalks, he is a Travel Writer and a Journalist who talks about going nowhere and taking the time to travel within. He has been all over the world but said that nothing compares to the inner journey you take to know yourself. You could be the most attentive listener in the world, but does it really matter if you don’t set time to listen to yourself?

The best way that I could develop more attentive and more appreciative eyes, was oddly, by going nowhere, just by sitting still. And of course sitting still is how many of us get what we most crave and need in our accelerated lives, a break. – Pico Iyer.

History is in the making, being present in your own life by listening to your inner voice will bring about a greater inter-connectedness with the world, when you can be there for other members of society as well as yourself. Our connectedness is strengthened by the art of stillness. Pico Iyer continues to say;

I mean nothing more intimidating than taking a few minutes out of every day or a few days out of every season, or even as some people do, a few years out of a life in order to sit still long enough to find out what moves you the most, to recall where your truest happiness lies and to remember that sometimes making a living and making a life point in the opposite directions.

If I don’t meditate regularly I feel disconnected to my inner world and who I am as a soul. Finding stillness and making time to sit still is key to discovering who you are. In today’s world, we are easily distracted by our mobile phones, answering emails, running around pleasing others. That will get tiring after a while if you don’t take time to yourself. Meditation is a way to connect with your inner soul and fine-tune your own breath to find a balance in midst of everything that is happening around you. Many of us are planning that 2-week holiday to paradise, we spend weeks and months thinking about that particular place we spent hundreds of dollars on, imagining in our minds theatre what activities we will attend, how great it will be to finally relax and renew. Mindfulness is also the holiday you need and you can travel there every single day + it’s completely free of charge. You will feel renewed just after a couple of 20 breaths, gain deeper insights which will benefit how you respond in your life, towards yourself and others. For example, let’s say that I was working on deepening my understanding of self-worth. For years I had thoughts like; “I’m not worthy of my dreams”, “I’m not good enough”, “They are much better at __________ than I am”. Through meditation and mindful awareness, one starts to recognize the negative mind and how this mind full of negativity limits us to pursue a healthy mind, a healthy body, and even achieving our ultimate happiness. I remember I stood in front of the mirror telling myself positive affirmations “I am worthy of pursuing a dream like everyone else, I am not defined by my anxiety, I am stronger now when I have realized the power I have within to change my own thoughts”. This was a necessary shift I had to do or else I would have drowned in my own mental rubbish.  Awakening begins with seeing the reality of existence in a whole new way, illusions like fear disappear and you start to introduce new ways of healthy thinking, that impacts your whole well-being.

The Truth Will Set You Free
Many of us don`t feel comfortable confronting thoughts that hurt us the most. The past is in the past, you might find yourself saying. Then already the very next day a feeling attached to that same thought you didn’t want to confront, haunts you with feelings of burdens, anxiety, depression, feeling lost or whatever you might be feeling. This is the moment you should start opening the door to yourself and observe the thoughts that pass through your mind. I was one of them, I was so frightened, to tell the truth when someone asked me how I felt today. I lied to them and continued to lie to myself. These lies created a life of someone else, it wasn’t my story to tell. I needed to find my own voice in the midst of the hurricane that I had whirling in my mind. How did I find my inner voice? Meditation and Yoga helped me be more in touch with my own vulnerability, what my strengths were and also how I had lived a life lying to myself. Now I’ve changed course, living an authentic life that is all mine, trying to be free of fear and full of possibilities. Bare this in mind when you degrade yourself to become a person who won’t allow yourself to change, to Live, Love and Forgive. Think about the weight of your experiences and wisdom that you have attained throughout your entire life. Using that knowledge and strength through raising the vibration of yourself will make the lives of others much easier. It will show them they were never alone in this.  Yogi Bhajan used to say;

There is a way through every block

The path to self-realization is a road of ups-and-downs, fear is one of the greatest warriors one has to battle with ourselves. When you start to take the first leap into the nature of self, I promise you-you’ll be rewarded.
